Badass Vegans From History

Because of our delicious and badass vegan protein cookies, we know many badasses and many vegans; in this blog, we’d like to introduce you to some historical figures who were both!

Pythagoras

If you have ever taken a geometry class, you have heard of this Greek scholar. Pythagoras was a vegetarian 2,500 years ago. Plant-based diets were referred to as the “Pythagorean diet” until the 1800s, when the word “vegetarian” came in vogue. Pythagoras was a vegan for ethical reasons; he is quoted as saying, “as long as men massacre animals, they will kill each other. Indeed, he who sows the seed of murder and pain cannot reap joy and love.”

Leonardo da Vinci

Leonardo da Vinci was an artist, mathematician, inventor, and writer of the Italian Renaissance. He is famous for his study of mathematics, engineering, art, anatomy, and sculpture. Reportedly, he became a vegetarian due to his study of Pythagoras. He said, “My body will not be a tomb for other creatures.”

Mary Shelley

“Frankenstein” author Mary Shelley was also a vegan. In her most famous work, she made the monster a vegetarian as well. In the book, he says that, “my food is not that of man, I do not destroy the lamb and the kid to glut my appetite; acorns and berries afford me sufficient nourishment.”

Mahatma Gandhi

Mahatma Gandhi was a leader in the movement for Indian independence, using civil disobedience to create change. He was mentored by Rajchandra, a Jain philosopher who promoted “ahimsa,” meaning the complete avoidance of violence to all living beings. Gandhi wrote, “The life of a lamb is no less precious than that of a human being. I should be unwilling to take the life of a lamb for the sake of the human body.”

Paul McCartney

Paul McCartney took the world by storm as a member of The Beatles. Today, McCartney uses his fame to fight for animal rights. He has worked with PETA to create PSAs for veganism.

Albert Einstein

Theoretical physicist known for developing the theory of relativity, Einstein became a vegetarian later in life, and is quoted as saying that “nothing will benefit human health and increase chances of survival for life on earth as much as the evolution of a vegetarian diet.”
