Going Vegan on a Budget, Part Two

In our last blog, we started to go over ways you can eat vegan on a budget. In this blog, we will continue to provide ways in which you can eat a plant-based diet without breaking the bank.

Buy organic selectively

In general, though organic food is healthier, it is more expensive, so it can be difficult to buy organic when you are trying to save money. You may choose to buy organic only when it is on sale, or to buy only certain organic items. Prioritize buying organic when there is no peel to protect against pesticides.

Plan ahead

The key to saving money in general is to plan ahead. Get flyers from the local grocery stores in the area, and compare their coupons to see where the best place will be to save money on groceries. Make your grocery list based on what is on sale, and plan for multiple meals using the same ingredients to prevent waste.

Make your own meat substitutes

Pre-packaged veggie burgers and vegan cheese, particularly when you are buying them regularly, can really pad your grocery bill. Instead, try making your own meat substitutes. You could make black bean burgers, lentil loafs, or tempeh bacon for a fraction of the cost of packaged stuff. Plus, that way, you know exactly what is going into your food.

Shop online

There are many retailers online that sell vegan foods for a discount. Even if their original prices aren’t discounted, many online retailers regularly offer coupon codes and sales, so subscribe to a couple of their newsletters to keep informed about the best place to buy your vegan essentials.
