How To Become A Vegan Athlete

There is a misconception that in order to be an athlete, you need to eat meat. After all, protein is essential for muscle building and recovery, and a vegan diet couldn’t possibly provide enough protein for an athlete, right? Wrong! It is perfectly possible to be both vegan and an athlete, as long as you educate yourself on the proper way to fuel your workouts. Here is our guide for becoming a vegan athlete:

Don’t eat junk food

Many people are under the mistaken impression that if you are vegan, your diet is healthy just because it doesn’t contain animal products. However, it is very easy to become a “junk food vegan,” simply eating heavily processed fake meats and potato chips. Just because a food is vegan doesn’t mean it is healthy. Stick to whole, unprocessed foods for optimal athletic performance and health.

Prep your meals

Meal preparation is the best way to ensure that you have access to the nutritional foods you need to fuel your workout and aid your recovery. By preparing your food in advance, you can always eat well-balanced meals, even when you get really busy. Try setting aside one day a week to plan and prep your meals for the week.

Take a B12 supplement

While you can get most of your nutrition through a vegan diet, there is one supplement that you will likely want to take. Vitamin B12 is essential for brain health, energy levels, and your overall physical health, and is mostly only found in animal products. Therefore, taking a vegan B12 supplement is important. One vegan B12 source is spirulina, a major ingredient in our vegan energy bars.

When you are an athlete on the go, you need a snack that will give you all the fuel you need. That is why we created Badass Power Cookie, a vegan energy bar for badasses everywhere. Try one today!
