Healthy Foods That Aren’t

When you walk down the aisles of the grocery store, there are many foods that are advertised as healthy, but actually have no nutritional benefits. Without a closer look, it’s difficult to discern which are genuinely healthy and which are just cleverly disguised as health food. In this blog, we will go over some of the main culprits of this deception, and what healthy version you can eat instead.

“Healthy” Cereals

There are many cereals on the market that claim to be healthy. Even if they are labeled organic, high in fiber, and full of flax seeds and whole grains, that cereal may be chock full of sugar, canceling out any benefits you may gain from the other stuff. Additionally, many high-fiber cereals supplement their formulas with added fiber to hide the fact that the grains are over processed and refined. When you are shopping for cereal, always read the label to ensure that there are less than 6 grams of sugar per serving. Additionally, you want to make sure that the ingredients list is short, and doesn’t contain artificial sweeteners or added fibers.

Green Juices

When you are strolling down the produce aisle, you may notice green juices in bottles, and feel tempted to grab one. After all, if you could get the nutrients from kale without having to actually eat it, that would be great, right? Yes, that would be great for the pickier eaters among us, but unfortunately, these bottled juices are most often loaded with sugar, sometimes with as much as 50 grams a bottle. Though this sugar is from fruit, that doesn’t mean that it isn’t going to affect you the way a bag of M&Ms will. Opt instead for a zero-calorie sparkling water when you need a fruity beverage, and eat your vegetables for the nutrients.

Rice Cakes

Rice cakes have long been thought of as a diet food, but just because it is low in calories, doesn’t mean it is high in nutritional value. In fact, rice cakes have virtually no macronutrients to speak of, and if you choose a flavored version, you are looking at a ton of artificial sweeteners and dyes. If you need a crunchy snack, look for a whole-grain cracker or popcorn.
